>>RC> The "days of Peleg" began around 2247 BC and ended around 2008 BC. Figuring from 2247 BC to 1492 AD (when Columbus sailed the blue), an average rate of movement of ONLY 0.3-inch per minute is fast enough. >>>QU8> Amazing how these people survived this sudden, drastic land movement. >>RC> Drastic? MAXIMUM speed for a -SNAIL- is about 30 inches per minute. Land movement at 1/100th of a snail's top speed is hardly drastic. >QU13> Yes, drastic. We are not talking snails here, we are talking about continental plates. No, a GRADUAL .3 inch per minute speed is TINY, compared to the 21-foot momentary JOLT of an earthquake (San Francisco, 1906.) 21-feet in a few minutes is drastic, but 21-feet in 14 hours is NOT! (You can jack-rabbit start from a red light while the car next to you starts out easy, but you both end up stopped at the next light. :) >QU13> The energy required to move them is enormous, even at the slow rate at which they currently move (I think it's something like 2 inches per _year_),... Present RESIDUAL movement ranges from less than 1 inch to more than 6 inches per year, depending which plate boundary you are talking about. The plates seem to be pretty close to equilibrium at present. >QU13> ), ...and the grinding at plate boundaries that would be caused by an 18 inch per hour speed would cause the San Andreas Faultline to explode. It didn't explode with the 21-foot movement in minutes in 1906. The splitting of the WHOLE earth into 7 major continental plates would of course have caused earthquakes, and the name PELEG means EARTHQUAKE. You need to remember that the greatest force of the shock would be at the epicenters, and diminish with distance away from [them]. The quakes would be felt everywhere, but most noticeable near the splits. Consider this. The earth orbits around the sun at a speed of about 18.51 miles per second. The rotational speed of the earth around the axis at my latitude is about .2838 miles per second. At midnight, the direction of rotational movement is the same way the earth is moving about the sun, giving a combined speed of about 18.7937mi/sec. At noon, the rotational movement is opposite the orbital direction, resulting in a lesser speed of about 18.2262 miles/sec. That means that my velocity of movement through the solar system from noon to midnight increases by about 3000 FEET PER SECOND over a 12 hour time period, while I travel about 4 million miles WITHOUT noticing either acceleration or the speed of movement. NOT drastic! (-15 Please see "(16) The Earth Divided" message next. Thanks. :)
