From a "Questioning User" (QU14) followup to "The Earth Divided"--

The July 1982 Kentucky earthquake near Maysville was far enough away from the Cincinnati area that the earth here only moved about .5 inch slowly. I was sitting in the basement and did NOT feel the movement, but HEARD the house moving with a sound like someone RUNNING across the floor above me, from the front of the house toward the rear. (I guess the front started raising and lowering before the back. :)

I got ANGRY momentarily at the supposed runner, since I was trying to concentrate on some reading, but then it dawned on me that: Oh, Wow! A real live earthquake! Uh oh! The WHOLE house is above me! Pangæan Panic! Quick, run for the stairs, but no, don't go all the way around to the bottom and go straight up; take a short cut and step up from the side; Wham! OUCH! Caught my back on the edge of the ceiling! (Smart! The quake was DONE, before I even stood up to run. :)

Now, consider the splitting away of North America from Europe. An observer in Europe would see an ever-widening water filled "channel" between the two, and the further away they moved, North America would appear to be slowly -sinking- LOWER below the horizon.

The leading (west) edge of the Atlantæan plate would be piling up mountains, but the trailing edge would tend to tilt lower. The effect of both the lowering of the trailing edge and movement away from Europe at about 360-feet per day would be VERY noticeable. That is, assuming that the underwater upwelling of hot lava did not make too much steam to obscure observation. And of course associated also with the event would be lightnings and "thunder-boomers" and quite a bit of trembling, including people with much fearful wonderment.

The account of an Atlantæan continent SINKING, passed through a few generations would end up as a legend not unlike that of the lost continent of ATLANTIS.

The mechanisms used for moving continents around are not yet fully known, but there seems to be general agreement concerning spreading: "When a zone of spreading is initiated beneath a continental mass, the immediate result will be a DEEP, precipitous RIFT VALLEY that slowly widens into a new ocean. The rigidity of the granitic crust allows the fragments to retain their shapes, in spite of some warping and erosion of their borders..." (Collier, 1976 year book, p.66)

In the day of the LORD, we see something similar happening: "And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south." (Zech.14:4)

The EARTHQUAKE in the days of Uzziah king of Judah is mentioned in association with the people fleeing to "the valley of the mountains." At present, the Jordan river valley is a RIFT VALLEY running north and south, but the valley spoken of in Zechariah will run east and west, dividing the mount of Olives, to make a place of refuge from the horrendous consumation described later in Zech.14:12. Remember that Jesus is the LORD and take refuge in him, both now and forever. Grace be to them that love the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. --Richard
