 Section 18

{Conclusion.}

• 18:1 Many other things we might give thee warning of, gentle reader, if we had not exceeded the measure of a Preface already.
• 18:2 It remaineth that we commend thee to God, and to the Spirit of His grace, which is able to build further than we can ask or think.
• 18:3 He removeth the scales from our eyes, the vail from our hearts, opening our wits that we may understand His Word, enlarging our hearts, yea, correcting our affections, that we may love it above gold and silver, yea, that we may love it to the end.
• 18:4 Ye are brought unto fountains of living water which ye digged not; do not cast earth into them, with the Philistines, [Gen.26:15] neither prefer broken pits before them, with the wicked Jews. [Jer.2:13]
• 18:5 Others have laboured, and you may enter into their labours.
• 18:6 O receive not so great things in vain; O despise not so great salvation!
• 18:7 Be not like swine to tread under foot so precious things, neither yet like dogs to tear and abuse holy things.
• 18:8 Say not to our Saviour with the Gergesites [Matt.8:34], Depart out of our coasts; neither yet with Esau [Heb.12:16] sell your birthright for a mess of pottage.
• 18:9 If light be come into the world, love not darkness more than light; if food, if clothing, be offered, go not naked, starve not yourselves.
• 18:10 Remember the advice of Nazianzene, [Nazianz. peri ag. bapt. deinon panhgurin parelqein kai thnikauta pragmateian epizhtein.] It is a grievous thing (or dangerous) to neglect a great fair, and to seek to make markets afterwards:
• 18:11 also the encouragement of S.Chrysostome, [S.Chrysost. in epist. ad Rom. Cap. 14. orat. 26. in hqik. amhcanon sfodra amhcanon.] It is altogether impossible, that he that is sober (and watchful) should at any time be neglected.
• 18:12 Lastly, the admonition and menacing of S.Augustine, [S.August. ad artic. sibi falso object. Artic. 16.] They that despise God's will inviting them, shall feel God's will taking vengeance of them.
• 18:13 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God; [Heb.10:31] but a blessed thing it is, and will bring us to everlasting blessedness in the end, when God speaketh unto us, to hearken; when He setteth His Word before us, to read it; when He stretcheth out His hand and calleth, to answer, Here am I; here we are to do thy will, O God.
• 18:14 The Lord work a care and conscience in us to know Him and serve Him, that we may be acknowledged of Him at the appearing of our Lord JESUS CHRIST, to whom with the Holy Ghost, be all praise and thanksgiving. Amen.

Section 18 Footnotes --
#f61 AV Genesis 26:15 For all the wells which his father's servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth.

#f62 AV Jeremiah 2:13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
#f63 Gergesites = Gergesenes (Mat.8:28-34 - where Jesus cast the devils out of the possessed and the devils went into the swine and perished in the sea.)
AV Mat.8:33 And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils.
AV Mat.8:34 And, behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts.

#f64 AV Hebrews 12:14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
AV Heb.12:15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;
AV Heb.12:16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.
AV Heb.12:17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
#f65 AV Hebrews 10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
#f66 "the appearing" - Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. Amen.
AV Titus 2:11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
AV Titus 2:12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
AV Titus 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
AV Titus 2:14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

The word of faith says, That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved; For whosoever shall call upon the name of the LORD shall be saved. Call upon him now, while he is near.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with us all. Amen.
