Winter Fruit From a message by a Curious Questioner-- >>??> They [knew] how to preserve "grape juice", just as they knew how to ferment it to make wine. How did they preserve grape juice (Grk.gleukos), olive oil, pulse, corn and dates FRESH for nearly A HUNDRED YEARS at Masada? "These fruits were also fresh and full ripe, and no way inferior to such fruits newly laid in, although they were a little short of a hundred years from the laying in these provisions [by Herod] till the place was taken by the Romans:" (Josephus, "Jewish Wars", Book 7, Chapter 8, Section 4p) Pliny and others confirm that provisions laid up against sieges continued for a hundred years. Augustine Calmet (born 1672), in the "Dictionary of the Bible" says that the ancients possessed the secret of preserving wines SWEET throughout the year. If they were alcoholic, they would preserve themselves, but the peculiarity was preserving them sweet and unfermented. The Bible says that "new wine is found in the cluster." Grape-juice will not ferment when the air is completely excluded. Another way to preserve grape juice fresh is to slow boil it until it thickens. Since water boils at 212F, any alcohol present could not remain, since alcohol evaporates at 170F. A third way is to simply filter the juice to deprive it of its [yeast], or ferment, thereby making the production of alcohol impossible. Yeast can also be nullified by adding oils that contain sulphur, such as oil of mustard. In the "Bibliotheca Sacra", Henry Homes says, "Simple grape-juice, without the addition of any earth to neutralize the acidity, is boiled from four to five hours, so as to reduce it one-fourth the quantity put in. After the boiling, for preserving it cool, and that it be less liable to ferment, it is put into earthen instead of wooden vessels, closely tied over with skin to exclude air. It ordinarily has not a particle of intoxicating quality, being used freely by both Mohammedans and Christians. Some which I have had on hand for two years has undergone no change." >>??> Personally, realizing that wine make me sick, I use grape juice in the Lord's supper. Is that wrong?NO, the word "wine" does NOT appear among his words there. The Lord Jesus referred to "the fruit of the vine" and "the cup", at his last passover with the disciples, and the apostle Paul called the same, "the cup of blessing." The cup was divided among the disciples, and they drank of the freshly squeezed "fruit" of the vine, grape juice, and ate newly broken unleavened bread. These things were commanded of the Lord, as he said, "This do in remembrance of me." His blood is pure and holy, typified by pure grape juice, not the corrupt liquor of catholicism associated with "the table of devils." Remember that Jesus is the Lord and be not partakers with them. Grace be to them that receive the love of the truth. Amen. --Richard
